New Wheels Museum mural honoring victims of violent crime

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A striking art display was just unveiled Saturday at the popular Wheels Museum, honoring victims of violent crime. Local artist, Ryan Saavedra, lost his son to gun violence in 2021 and was selected by the city’s public art program to highlight the rich and colorful history of not only New Mexico, but the Land of Enchantment as a whole.

The mural, titled “Brighter Days, Historic Ways,” is said to serve as a healing project for victims of violent crimes to find connection in the community. “I lost my son four years ago; he was murdered four years ago and I’ve been going through a tragic loss, and through art, I feel like this is healing and I wanted to bring it to the community and hire the community to come in for those that lsot their loved ones and pay them for therapy reasons to come out so we can heal and get them out of their depression,” said Saavedra.

The 1,200-square-foot mural can be found at the southernmost end of the west-facing wall on the Wheels Museum’s exterior…
