Albuquerque native Diego Pavia falls short of Heisman Trophy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque native Diego Pavia’s college football career might almost be over but the headlines are certainly not.

The Heisman Committee named Diego Pavia the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in New York City – the highest a New Mexico native has ever placed in the Heisman race. That accomplishment and his historic season with Vanderbilt University has had plenty of people talking, especially here at home.

  • “I think Diego Pavia was robbed. He deserved the Heisman Trophy.”
  • “I think he should have won the Heisman. What he did for Vanderbilt is legendary.”

Pavia agreed. He expressed his frustration with not winning the Heisman Trophy in some comments that garnered controversy:

The New Mexico State University transfer put up 3,192 passing yards, 826 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns – 27 TD passes and nine rushing TDs – in 12 games as a Vanderbilt Commodore this season…
