Sandia National Laboratories helps NASA test VIPER rover

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — NASA’s “VIPER” mission to map water concentrations on the moon left its rover spinning at Sandia National Laboratories. Scientists put the “VIPER” rover to the test in a centrifuge with more than 300 Gs of force, vibration, spin, thermal and shock environments which are meant to mimic launch and reentry conditions.

Sandia Labs was chosen as the facility for testing the rover as it is home to a one-of-a-kind 29-foot “Superfuge.” VIPER’s mission to map the location of water on the moon is expected to start in 2027.
