Albuquerque man charged with fatal stabbing at bus stop

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A homeless man is in custody after Albuquerque police said he stabbed someone to death at an ART bus stop. According to an arrest warrant, 56-year-old Bernest Benjamin was seen on surveillance video boarding a bus near Central Ave. and Louisiana Boulevard before following the victim off of it.

At one point, police said Benjamin lunged at the victim, and the victim fell to the ground. Benjamin was then seen standing over the man, and police believe Benjamin stabbed him in the chest, killing him, before taking off. Police arrest Benjamin a couple of blocks away.

It’s not his first run-in with the law. Benjamin pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter after he killed a man during a fight in 2018. The Albuquerque Police Department said Benjamin was also arrested during an operation targeting armed robberies last month, but he was released from custody in that case…
