Study suggests road changes to dangerous intersection in Rio Rancho

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – On Thursday, the state released the results of a study aimed at making the area around Highway 528 safer following several deadly crashes. However, Rio Rancho city councilors argue that the state’s proposed solutions could lead to more problems.

Over the years, many homes have been built in the area, leading to a significant increase in traffic along 528, particularly near Pasilla and Riverside. Greg Clarke from the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) reported, “Every year since 2014, the volume along 528 has increased from 19,500 in 2014  up to 21,000 vehicles per day. That’s an annual yearly count.”

Local drivers have expressed concerns that this stretch of road has become both dangerous and deadly. In June, local leaders held a public meeting requesting that the New Mexico Department of Transportation study the area.
