Local artist honors gun violence victims with Wheels Museum mural

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The local artist who helped put together the new mural outside the Wheels Museum gave back to the families who helped bring his vision to life.

The mural offers a glimpse into the history of transportation and commerce in Albuquerque. But if you ask Ryan Saavedra, the local artist who organized the mural, the meaning behind it is deeper. Saavedra recruited families who have lost loved ones to gun violence for the mural.

Saavedra lost his son, Ryan Jr., to gun violence in 2021. He told us back when they started the mural, art helped him in many ways, and he wanted to give other families in a similar situation that same opportunity…
