Trending warm in New Mexico with rain, mountain snow chances this weekend

Mild to warm low temperatures have settled into the state of New Mexico, so far, this morning. Around 5 a.m. Albuquerque was roughly 15 degrees above normal for Friday, December 26. Today, high-level clouds are expected to increase throughout the state with temperatures warming up to be roughly 15-20 degrees above normal for afternoon highs. A few cities could come close to setting record high temperatures once again this week. Albuquerque’s record high temperature was set at 63 degrees back in 2005. Mild low temperatures will persist once again into Saturday morning as rain and snow showers will swing back into the forecast once again.

A surge of deeper moisture in the middle of the atmosphere will contribute to spotty rain showers and mountain snow on Saturday. Mountain snow will have the best chance for accumulation in parts of the northern mountains extending into the southern Colorado. The National Weather Service will have a Winter Weather Advisory in place for La Plata County and parts of the San Juan Mountains starting at midnight and lasting through Sunday morning for the snowfall, gusty winds and the potential for slick roadways. After the spotty shower chances in New Mexico cooler air is expected for next week.

On Sunday a backdoor cold front is slated to enter northeast New Mexico and slide through the state bringing in colder air. By the time we get into Monday and Tuesday temperatures will be seasonable in Albuquerque and potentially 5 to 10 degrees below normal in eastern New Mexico. Breezy winds will also be around New Mexico particularly in the east throughout the weekend too…
