Overcapacity Las Vegas animal shelter has 55 dogs transferred to Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  An overcrowded shelter in Northern New Mexico is getting a helping hand. Volunteers traveled to Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon to move dozens of dogs to Albuquerque, giving them a second chance at life.

Daenerys is just one of 55 dogs, most of them puppies, transferred this week from the City of Las Vegas Animal Care Center, which had run out of space. “Daenerys is a very sweet little girl. She’s approximately three months old, and she is a Doberman mix,” shared Madison Beets, Associate Director of Marketing with Animal Humane New Mexico.

Daenerys came to the AHNM this week with serious injuries on her head and lesions on her body after being dumped on the side of the high way in Las Vegas, “And now at Animal Humane, she’ll be able to be scheduled for her spay surgery, get all of the care, love and attention she needs before she captures someone’s heart. Like she has all of ours,” continued Beets.

The Las Vegas Animal Shelter had nearly 100 dogs in its care, but only had enough space for half of them. The shelter had just four staff members to care for them, but things quickly changed when Animal Humane gave them a call. “They took like 50-some dogs from us, mostly all of our puppies. They took one of our dogs that we were treating for heartworm, ” explained shelter manager for the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter, Beatriz Hernandez…
