NM Wildlife Center picks porcupine as new ambassador animal

ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Wildlife Center is welcoming one of its newest ambassador animals. Yucca, the North American porcupine, is 10 months old and was born in a species survival program.

The program is led by experts who work to maximize genetic diversity and manage the long-term sustainability of certain species. The wildlife center says that many are surprised to find out that procupines are native to New Mexico.

They are nocturnal and spend most of their time in the trees. Staff says they have had 11 North American porcupines in their wildlife hospital since 2018.
