Community takes Polar Plunge to ring in new year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Members of the community braved the cold and took the plunge to start off their year at the annual Polar Plunge. The City of Albuquerque hosted the event at the Sierra Vista Swim Center, and tons of plungers came out to jump into freezing water, all for a good cause.

Proceeds from the event went to support the BioPark’s enrichment programs and the Shanta Strong Swim Fund, which provides free lessons to kids. “One month of formal swim lessons reduces the risk of drowning by 88%, so that’s huge,” said Julia Romero, aquatics lesson program manager.

During the event, prizes were given out to the youngest and oldest plungers, the largest group, and the best costume. Organizers said the best part was seeing the community participate in something beneficial for the city, and it was a great way to set the new year off right…
