CNM and New Mexico Department of Public Safety teaming up on legal training for officers

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico’s Department of Public Safety is teaming up with Central New Mexico Community College to refresh its legal training for officers. DPS and CNM are developing a new 68-hour program to give officers a better understanding of criminal and civil law, including jurisdiction, arrests, hate crimes, and juvenile law.

Legislation prefile period underway for upcoming New Mexico legislative session

CNM said the training has always been required, but it needed an update. “The law changes from time to time. It’s important for them to be really well-versed in it. They will also be taught by really established prosecutors and people who have experience in this profession,” said Sebastian Martinez, Senior Director of Business Development at CNM.

The training will start next month at the DPS Training Academy in Santa Fe…
