Hearing set in case against Albuquerque bookstore allowing homeless camp on property

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A judge could decide this week whether a homeless camp can stay up at an Albuquerque bookstore. Last year, the city took legal action against Quirky Books & More on Jefferson St., saying the property had become a public nuisance. Owner Gillam Kerley said he’s trying to provide a safe space for the homeless, but nearby businesses said the area has become riddled with vandalism, human waste, and discarded needles.

City of Albuquerque claims bookstore’s homeless encampment led to recent fire and drug trafficking

After a deadly shooting in November and a fire last month, the city has filed two emergency applications to close the camp as the case moves forward. A hearing on those filings is set for this Thursday.
