ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The FBI handles cybercrimes of all sorts so, naturally, they have tips for you to avoid becoming a victim of these crimes.
The four most common types of crimes they see are:
- Email compromises
- Identity theft
- Ransomware
- Spoofing and phishing
Justin Garris, the Special Agent In-Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque field office, shared what you can do to protect yourself, especially from ransomware.
“Have a good, strong antivirus. Then, what I would recommend to the public is make sure you have strong, unique passwords. That’ll help mitigate some of those threats and especially malware,” Garris said. “Up-to-date software as well. Whenever in doubt, if something’s suspicious and it comes to your email, your text message, I would always suggest someone else look at that. Have a friend, have a family member. I do it. It may look like it’s a legit business email, may look like it’s a legit business emailing you, a promotion, and in reality, it’s fraud.”…
