Albuquerque woman accused of starting apartment fire while children were inside

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque woman has been charged for allegedly starting a fire inside her apartment while her children were inside.

Albuquerque Police on Saturday were notified about a mental health emergency at an apartment at 12901 Central Ave. NE. When an officer arrived, they found 28-year-old Yailasha Smith sitting near the door of her home, while smoke was seen inside. When the officer tried to approach her, she slammed the door shut and spoke to the officer through the window, telling them her children were inside, according to court documents.

Smith ended up complying by opening the door, and an officer went inside the smoke-filled apartment, where they were able to safely remove two children in the home.

The officer then went back into the apartment to check for any other individuals and found a fire in the bathroom…
