Man accused of killing son and shooting wife and another child in Tijeras appears in court

TIJERAS, N.M. (KRQE) – The man accused of killing his four-year-old child and injuring his wife and one-year-old, made his first appearance in court on Wednesday afternoon. Bernalillo County deputies arrested 41-year-old Luis Sanchez at his home in Tijeras on Tuesday. Deputies said they met Sanchez at the door to his house, where he was naked and completely covered in blood.

Inside, they found the body of Sanchez’s four-year-old son, dead from a gunshot wound. His wife and one-year-old child had been shot multiple times and were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. As of Wednesday afternoon, their condition is still unknown. Sanchez will be held in detention as he awaits his next hearing date.

Wednesday afternoon, the New Mexico Department of Justice announced that it had taken over prosecution of the case. The NMDOJ sent this statement:

The New Mexico Department of Justice has formally entered its appearance and assumed prosecution of the case stemming from yesterday’s shooting in Tijeras that left a 4-year-old child dead and the child’s mother and brother seriously injured. This was a horrific act of violence that has devastated a family and shaken the entire community. We extend our deepest sympathies to the surviving family members and to her colleagues at the District Attorney’s Office during this unimaginably painful time. The community should be assured that this alleged cowardly and brutal attack will not go unpunished. As the state’s chief law enforcement agency, the New Mexico Department of Justice will be unwavering in its pursuit of justice and full accountability in this case…
