BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Bernalillo County Treasurer’s Office is going penniless. This comes after the coin stopped being made at the federal level in November, due to production cost concerns.

The county says it will round payments made in cash to the nearest 5 cents. Transactions ending in 1, 2, 6 or 7 cents will be rounded down to the nearest round-cent or five cents. Transactions ending in 3, 4, 8 or 9 cents will be rounded up to the nearest five or ten cents. The county says any penny rounding will be noted directly on the receipt in an effort to keep all business dealings transparent. Rounding rules will not apply to electronic or other non-cash payments. Anyone with questions about penny rounding can contact the county treasurer’s office.
