Strong winds, snowfall ahead for New Mexico

Good afternoon!

We have been trending colder in Albuquerque, and the metro area, this morning due to thicker low-level clouds keeping us in the 30s. Another component to today’s forecast has been the winds, like we have experienced much of this week. Wind gusts have ranged around 30-40 mph throughout the state with the highest gusts reaching 61 mph in Santa Rosa and 79 mph in Raton. Winds are expected to pick up once again at the surface tomorrow in New Mexico.

The National Weather Service (NWS) will have Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings in place from 9am-5pm, on Friday, throughout the central mountain chain and east for gusts that could reach 60 mph. The combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures in the east will also create a fire risk today and Friday. Red Flag Warnings are also in effect for today and tomorrow from 12-6 pm, each day, for the majority of eastern New Mexico. As we head into the weekend winds are expected to ease statewide compared to the strong winds many of us have experienced throughout this week. Ahead for tonight is snowfall in parts of New Mexico and southern Colorado, which will last through tomorrow morning…
