Polar Bear Day celebrated at ABQ BioPark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Lots of people came out to the BioPark in honor of International Polar Bear Day. The event raises awareness for polar bear conservation and coincides with the time period when bear moms are denning with their cubs.

BioPark volunteers shared biofacts with visitors and used this day to celebrate its one and only polar bear, Kiska. “So, currently, we only have one polar bear. His name is Kiska, and believe it or not, he’s 29 years old, which is way above the average lifespan of a polar bear, but out here, he still acts like he’s in his teens,” said Cesar Bustillos, science education coordinator.

Kiska came out to get some treats and say, “Hello,” during a training session. The event also featured discovery stations where people got to touch real fur, play interactive games, and explore how these bears survive in arctic waters…
