NMDOT looks into safety solutions for busy intersection in east mountains

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A busy intersection in the east mountains is drawing attention, as NMDOT looks into solutions to cut down on crashes. Mountain Valley Road and NM 333 is a frequently used intersection in the east mountains by people wanting an alternative to I-40, or as a way to get to the interstate.

But with high speeds and dim lighting for a four-way road, there have been many crashes. “A lot of people come from the east mountains, even from behind the mountain, to get onto I-40,” Kimberly Gallegos said with NMDOT District 3.

NMDOT conducted a traffic study last year, which indicated a single lane roundabout would be the safest option. But they say they’re also open to the idea of a stoplight, or additional signage…
