Nursing home pays $75K to settle EEOC ageist harassment lawsuit

A New Mexico nursing home will pay $75,000 to quash allegations that it allowed a supervisor to harass two employees and later fired them in violation of age discrimination laws.

A US District Court judge last week approved a decree that effectively closed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission case against South Valley Care Center. The agency in June had alleged the nursing home subjected “a class of aggrieved individuals to harassment because of their age … and failed to prevent and correct this harassment.”

The $75,000 in back pay, a formal apology to the two women in the case and two years of enhanced anti-discrimination training at the facility will head off a jury trial…
