City completes dorm, community space renovations at Gateway West

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  The City of Albuquerque announced Friday that it has completed its renovation of all 12 dorm spaces at the Gateway West shelter.

Gateway West is the city’s largest homeless shelter, and classifies as an emergency shelter. The City’s Health, Housing, and Homeless Director says when he came into his position in 2024, he immediately noticed these upgrades were long overdue.

“The westside facility is an old decommissioned jail that was handed over to the city in the early 2000s and was never designed to do what we’ve pushed it into,” Health, Housing, and Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez said. “When I came in in 2024 a lot of folks were saying the facility needed work and maybe they weren’t safe and secure.”…
