Jury convicts man who shot New Mexico State Police officer in the neck

EDGEWOOD, N.M. (KRQE) – A jury on Thursday convicted a man who shot a New Mexico State Police officer in the neck in 2022.

Caleb Elledge was found guilty of aggravated assault on a peace officer with intent to commit a violent felony, aggravated battery on a peace officer (deadly weapon), aggravated battery on a peace officer (great bodily harm), aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, tampering with evidence, and criminal damage to property over $1,000, according to Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.

New Mexico State Police Lt. Jeremy Vaughan first encountered Caleb Elledge, who was out on probation, and his girlfriend Alana Martinez at a gas station near Edgewood on February 11, 2022. A gas station employee reported that Elledge’s girlfriend was using drugs inside the store and flagged the officer down.

When Vaughan approached Elledge’s vehicle, Elledge rammed his car into the officer’s patrol unit and fled, leading the officer on a chase. Vaughan carried out a PIT maneuver, causing the suspect’s vehicle to come to a stop. Elledge then opened fire, hitting Vaughan in the neck…
