ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Following allegations against Cesar Chavez, Albuquerque city leaders are working on renaming sites around the city that have his name.
Survey: Albuquerque teachers dealing with burnout and physical abuse from students
The first site to be impacted is the Cesar Chavez Community Center and Park, both located near Louisiana and Central. The city plans to cover his name at these spots, which is expected to be completed next week. Avenida Cesar Chavez is also part of the renaming project. The city says renaming a road takes several steps, including city council approval, coordination with the U.S. Postal Service and notification to properties on the street. To change public art pieces with Chavez’ name or likeness requires consent from the artist and the Arts Board.
