Followers show love for ‘La Santa Muerte’

JUAREZ, Mexico (Border Report) – Drums resonated as dozens marched along a busy avenue in Juarez, Mexico, carrying 3-foot-tall plaster statues. Cars with red and white balloons rolled slowly next to them. Some had the same stylized images of a female Grim Reaper fastened to the top of the vehicles.

In a city so accustomed to scenes that would shock most people elsewhere, the procession in honor of La Santa Muerte (Holy Death), went almost unnoticed.

In Juarez, even cops seek protection from ‘La Santa Muerte’

Juarez resident Carmen Castillo was among the throng. She held one of the scythe-clutching figures in her arms.

“She granted us a very important favor,” Castillo said. “My sister went missing. We knew nothing about her. My mom told Her, ‘I don’t believe in you. But if you give my daughter back to me, I will worship you.’ Someone called us and told us where our sister was.”…
