Business owners say late notice of protest caused confusion along Montgomery

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As protesters marched through northeast Albuquerque on Saturday, several nearby businesses say they felt left in the dark about when — or if — roads would be shut down. Many businesses in the area stayed open throughout the day, but some say they were hoping for clearer communication from city officials about potential closures.

Driving along Montgomery on Saturday, Albuquerque Police units and Public Safety Aides could be seen posted along busy intersections. Traffic flowed normally for most of the day, but some business owners said the uncertainty made it difficult to prepare.

Ken Dewees, owner of Chile Traditions, said he only learned about the protest a couple of days ago. “We all think it’s our freedom and we all want them,” Dewees said. “The only thing is, we don’t want to have to close our businesses.”

Dewees said he found out about possible street closures just two days earlier and was still unclear on the city’s plans. “I mean, I found out about this two days ago that they’re going to close down Montgomery — the street that everybody has to use to get to my business,” Dewees said. “And if you go ask them right now when they’re going to close the street down, what’s going to happen, they still don’t know.”…
