New Rio Rancho speed camera technology reduces speeding citations by 63 percent

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The city of Rio Rancho says its new speed cameras are doing what they’re supposed to: slowing drivers down.

The Rio Rancho Police Department (RRPD) says in the two months the mobile speed boxes have been live, they’re already seeing a big change in driver behavior in areas where the cameras are placed.

Two months after Rio Rancho’s new speed cameras started triggering citations, the police department says drivers are pumping the brakes. “In February, we recorded approximately 7,000 citations through the month of February and through the month of March. That number has reduced by 63 percent,” Captain Nick Army of the Rio Rancho Police Department explained…
