Cold morning to begin quiet, seasonable weekend

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Cold air has settled into the Land of Enchantment with temperatures falling below freezing in the northern half of the state. If you live in the metro area, temperatures are below or around freezing at this hour, don’t forget to grab your coat as you head out the door. The cooler temperatures this morning are from two cold fronts that passed through New Mexico on Friday. Weather observation sites have picked up wind gusts in the low 30s in southern New Mexico at 6 a.m. Calmer conditions are ahead for the weekend for most.

Winds throughout this weekend will still be breezy to windy in southern New Mexico. In the southwest corner of the state, wind gusts on Sunday are forecasted to exceed 40 mph. Aside from the cold breezy weather to start the official holiday weekend, afternoon highs will be seasonable to mild. Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to top off primarily in the 60s and 70s for most locations. Tomorrow, moisture will stream into in southern New Mexico before deeper moisture streams into the state on Monday and Tuesday.

As moisture returns into southern New Mexico, sprinkles will be possible far south and in the Gila on Easter Sunday. Spotty to isolated rain chances are expected on Monday before rain chances increase on Tuesday, nearly statewide. Dewpoints, at the surface, will be dry throughout areas of the Land of Enchantment, which could lead to virga, dry thunderstorms. Light rain and storms are still possible on Tuesday of next week despite the drier conditions at the surface. After that, temperatures are expected to rise in the upper 70s and lower 80s in Albuquerque on Wednesday…
