AG announces 20-year sentence for woman charged in abuse death case

RIO RANCHO — A woman charged in 2023 with the death of developmentally disabled woman, Mary Melero, 38, of Rio Rancho, has pleaded guilty and will get a lengthy sentence.

Attorney General Raúl Torrez and the New Mexico Department of Justice’s Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Bureau announced April 6 that it secured a minimum of 20 years in prison for Angelita Chacon.

Chacon was charged with abuse of a resident resulting in death, false imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. A district court judge agreed to a plea deal that stipulates a sentence between 20-30 years in prison. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date as other involved parties, including Chacon’s co-conspirator Patricia Hurtado and Medicaid agent Keyona Zamora, will also be sentenced.
