Bernalillo to standardize addresses to speed 911 response

Some Bernalillo residents could see their home addresses change under a new ordinance the Town Council takes up for final vote Monday night — a fix town officials say is needed to help first responders find them faster.

The Town Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Town Hall, 829 Camino del Pueblo, to consider Ordinance 368, which standardizes how streets are named and buildings are numbered across Bernalillo. Planning and Zoning Director Rebecca Bolen will present the measure. A GIS review of town property data found addresses that are out of sequence, assigned to the wrong street, or otherwise inconsistent with state and national 911 addressing standards, according to the ordinance.

The council introduced the ordinance at its March 23 meeting. Under the measure, the town’s Planning and Zoning Department would identify nonconforming addresses and notify affected property owners by certified letter. Residents would have six months to update their records after notification — though 911-related changes would take effect as soon as possible. The town would notify the Sandoval County 911 dispatch center, the postal service and emergency services directly; residents would be responsible for updating utilities, delivery services, and other accounts not covered by the town…
