Windy weather returns this week

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Saturday was a gloomy day around New Mexico that was filled with cloudy skies, showers, and storms. Yesterday, showers moved through the metro area and Albuquerque. At the International Sunport, 0.07″ worth of rain accumulated. The National Weather Service (NWS) also issued Special Weather Advisories for strong storms that moved through the northern mountains, which brought strong wind gusts to that area and northeast New Mexico.

This morning, cloud coverage has decreased in the Land of Enchantment except in the far eastern part of New Mexico. Clear skies have brought cooler temperatures compared to Saturday morning for several communities as temperatures bottom out in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. This afternoon, temperatures are expected to be on the mild to seasonable side throughout the state. Highs are forecasted to warm up into the 60s and 70s for most. Gusty southwest winds are expected with gusts ranging from 30-35 mph, with some isolated locations potentially reaching 40 mph. This is just the first day; we are going to see stronger winds sweep back into the forecast for New Mexico.

By the time Tuesday rolls around, wind gusts are expected to increase along the central mountain chain and to the east. Wind gusts could surpass 45 and 50 mph in northeast New Mexico. On Monday, breezy winds around 30-45 mph are expected throughout the state. There will be a risk of fire danger throughout the week as stronger winds are forecasted.
