Nizhoni Days Powwow celebrates 67 years at UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Nizhoni Days Powwow celebrated its 67th year of Indigenous pride on The University of New Mexico campus on Sunday.

Bittersweet feeling for attendees at last Gathering of Nations

Nizhoni Days is Albuquerque’s oldest student cultural tradition and takes place every year at UNM’s Johnson Field.

An event organizer told KRQE News 13 that the goal of the powwow is to make sure the university’s Indigenous community feels welcome

“We’re really aiming to make sure that our Indigenous population here on campus feels welcome, that there’s a place for them here at UNM. So it’s really a way for us to get youth on campus, we want to make sure that they know there’s a place for them here in higher education,” said Mary Benavidez, UNM Kiva Club president…
