BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — An 18-year-old in custody at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center has died, according to MDC. The inmate, identified as 18-year-old Derrick Benavidez, was initially booked into MDC on March 15.

MDC says a corrections officer found Benavidez in “medical distress” at about 4:49 a.m. on Monday, April 27. MDC personnel and UNM Hospital’s medical team responded. Benavidez was pronounced dead at 5:34 a.m. by UNM Hospital staff.
“The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived at the facility to investigate. Consistent with standard protocol, the incident is also under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards,” Bernalillo County stated in a news release on Tuesday.
