Grandmother of family behind legendary Bugg Christmas light display passes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque Christmas tradition will be dimmer this year after the loss of the woman who helped create its magic. For decades, the Bugg lights have been more than just a Christmas display; they’ve been a holiday destination, drawing thousands of families to Albuquerque each year.

But behind the bright lights and holiday cheer was a family dedicated to keeping the tradition alive. That family is now mourning the loss of its matriarch, Joyce Bugg. She died Thursday night at the age of 88, after living with dementia.

“She was my grandmother, but like my mom, her and my grandpa raised me,” says relative Jared Bugg. “It’s a difficult time. But I know she’s not suffering, and I know she’s up there with my grandpa.”…
