Changes coming to work requirements for SNAP benefits in DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Starting Monday, changes are coming to how some people can qualify for SNAP benefits.

On June 1, D.C.’s Department of Human Services (DHS) will begin screening applicants for work requirements. This, after the federal government changed its policy, will require able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWD) to maintain work or volunteer hours to receive their benefits.

“No one will be losing their benefits on June 1,” explained Rachel Pierre, Director of D.C.’s DHS. “On June 1, we’ll be changing how we are screening our residents when they come to apply or recertify SNAP benefits. What it means, when they come in, we’ll tell them whether they are considered ABAWD, able-bodied adults without dependents, and if they are, we’ll screen them for any work requirements.”…
