Sila Nanotechnologies Opens New Facility in Washington

Washington is now home to the country’s first automotive-scale silicon anode material plant, made possible by a company with 15 years of experience researching and manufacturing materials for next-generation batteries.

What began as a startup at the Georgia Institute of Technology transformed into the materials company Sila Nanotechnologies. Founded in 2011, Sila pioneered the modern silicon anode, a lithium-ion battery component that enables faster charging and higher energy capacity than traditional graphite anodes.

At the core of the Alameda, Calif.-based company’s extensive portfolio is its silicon carbon (Si/C) anode, “the world’s first commercial silicon anode to maximize lithium-ion energy density with low swell comparable to graphite,” according to Sila’s website. The anode was invented by Gleb Yushin, PhD, Sila’s co-founder and chief technology officer, and commercially launched in 2021…
