Strong to severe storms possible to end out the weekend

It’s a DMV First Warn Day for the chance of strong to severe storms today, so make sure to stay weather aware. A mix of sun and clouds will be expected this afternoon with hot and humid conditions ahead of a cold front that is approaching from the west. Highs will reach back into the 90s with breezy southerly winds. The Storm Prediction has maintained its slight risk (2 out of 5) for the entire DMV for the threat of strong to severe storms. The main threat today will be damaging winds; however, frequent lightning, heavy downpours, hail, and an isolated tornado can not be ruled out.

As for timing, showers and a few storms will first pop up around midday in the western counties. Storms will start to push east during the second half of the afternoon into the early evening hours, and make their way to the Beltway around dinner time.

Storm chances will start to decrease as we head into the second half of the evening, with the cold front finally clearing the area tonight. Cooler air will filter in behind that front, and winds will shift out of the northwest. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the 60s. Expect a mix of sun and clouds Monday and Tuesday, with highs reaching the 80s and less humid conditions.

Cooler and less humid conditions do not last for too long. By mid-week and towards the end of the week, the heat, humidity, and storm chances will return to the DMV. By Thursday, another cold front could move through the Mid-Atlantic, which could spark up another round of strong to severe storms. We will continue to monitor the forecast.
