ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria’s DASH buses are gaining riders at one of the fastest rates in Northern Virginia. At the same time, Virginia is studying whether DASH should remain its own local system at all.
A new Northern Virginia Transportation Commission presentation puts DASH among the region’s top three year-over-year transit performers, with ridership up 10% in fiscal 2026. Loudoun County Transit led with a 28% increase, while Metrorail rose 9%.
The timing gives the number extra weight. The Virginia General Assembly has directed the Department of Rail and Public Transportation to evaluate whether DASH, Arlington Transit, Fairfax Connector and Fairfax City’s CUE should be consolidated into a single regional bus system.
A Local Success Story Meets a Regional Question
