A major beverage company has shut down operations at a longtime Maryland facility, ending more than six decades of production and leaving 143 workers without jobs.
PepsiCo has ended manufacturing and warehouse operations at its Pepsi Bottling Group facility in Cheverly, Maryland. The layoffs took effect September 14 and affected workers in fleet, transportation, manufacturing, production, warehouse operations, and other salaried positions.
Plant operated for more than 60 years
The Cheverly facility, located at 2611 Pepsi Place, had operated for more than 60 years and had become a familiar landmark in the Washington, D.C., area. PepsiCo’s decision affects the entire 143-person workforce connected to the plant’s manufacturing and related operations. Of those workers, 98 were union members.
PepsiCo said the decision was driven by changes in consumer demand, technology, and its operating network as the company works to modernize its operations.
Some Pepsi operations will continue
The shutdown does not mean PepsiCo is completely leaving the Cheverly area…
