Prince George’s County animal adoption center reopens after dog illness outbreak

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center (ASFAC) reopened its doors Saturday after closing down due to an outbreak of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus, or Strep Zoo.

Officials said that the facility first closed on Jan. 4, when dogs started showing signs of the illness.

In a release posted Thursday, officials said that it marked 10 days from the last emergence of Strep Zoo symptoms.

ASFAC said that some dogs still have symptoms and are receiving treatment, but those dogs are quarantined. Three rooms are open to the public and are symptom-free. ASFAC said that anyone who goes to adopt a pet in person can only interact with up to two dogs in these rooms.

Adoptions for cats and small animals also started back up on Saturday. ASFAC said that there were no resctrictions on those visits or adoptions.
