Complaints, confusion surrounding Prince George’s County plastic bag ban

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — There’s confusion over Prince George’s County’s new plastic bag ban. Customers claim they’ve been wrongly charged at certain businesses in the county.

The law went into effect at the beginning of January, banning plastic bags and adding a 10-cent fee for paper bags for takeout at restaurants and stores. Fast food bags at the drive-thru, restaurant leftovers and prescription drugs are exempt.

District 7 County Council member Krystal Oriadha said that although it’s not illegal to charge for paper bags at places like fast food drive-thru, she still believes businesses are taking advantage of this law and she wants to put a stop to it.

“You know, legally yes, they can do it, but morally we know that they’re taking advantage of the legislation,” said Oriadha.

The plastic bag ban is meant to prevent further pollution of the environment. Customers can either bring a reusable bag or purchase a paper bag for 10 cents.
