All wet: Tropical system could bring up to 4 inches of rain by Thursday

PETERSBURG – A wet week officially starts Tuesday as a tropical system that dumped a foot of rain or more along the Carolinas’ coastline dredges its way inland.

As much as four inches of rain is expected to fall across central Virginia between now and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service office in Wakefield. Spurts of precipitation could possibly cause problems in low-lying areas that traditionally experience issues.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” NWS said.

A flash flood watch is in effect for us until overnight Wednesday.

Local authorities warn motorists to stay clear of flooded roads because the water depth can sometimes be hard to judge from behind a steering wheel

The system responsible for our wet week moved ashore Monday near Wilmington, North Carolina. Weather officials there said as much as 18 inches of rain fell in less than 12 hours on the town of Carolina Beach.

NWS said that system, which stalled for a short time over the Carolinas Monday night, will lose strength on its march inland. At 5 p.m. Monday, according to USA TODAY, NWS said the system, which was packing 77-mph winds when it made landfall, had dropped to 35-45 mph.
