$4.9 million awarded to Forest Service to reduce wildfire risk in Southwest Virginia

NORTON, Va. (WJHL) — The George Washington and Jefferson National Forest’s Clinch Ranger District received $4,992,000 for wildfire reduction measures.

The funds will help the ranger district expand its resources to prevent “catastrophic wildfire risk” and manage hazardous fuels, the U.S. Forest Service announced in a news release.

The project is part of the USDA’s Collaborative Wildfire Risk Reduction management program.

“The objective of the Collaborative Wildfire Risk Reduction Program is to collaborate with tribes, communities and partners to reduce wildfire risk to communities, secure critical infrastructure, and enhance natural resources,” Clinch District Ranger Tiffany Cummins said in the release. “We are looking forward to making progress on these goals on the Clinch Ranger District.”

The Clinch Ranger District is identified as a high-fire risk area with rough terrain, dispersed communities and inholdings and a historic coal mining legacy, according to the release.
