WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — As Hurricane Helene continues to strengthen, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for several areas across D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
As of Thursday morning, the NWS upgraded Helene to a Category 2 hurricane. Officials said the hurricane is expected to bring a “catastrophic” storm surge with heavy rains and strong winds.
This will bring the chances for flooding impacting portions of DMV Friday into Saturday.
The NWS issued a coastal flood advisory for Washington, D.C. until 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. Officials said the flood watch will remain in effect until Saturday morning.
Alexandria business prepares for Hurricane Helene amid state of emergency
In Maryland, the flood advisory was issued for Calvert and Charles counties. It will remain in effect until 2 a.m. on Friday.
Lastly, in Virginia, the advisory was in effect for the following areas:
- Arlington
- Falls Church
- Alexandria
- Rappahannock County
- King George County
- Westmoreland County
