An Alexandria man is facing numerous charges after police say he tried to attack officers after acting erratically in the Maywood neighborhood.
It happened around 6 p.m. Sunday, just north of Langston Blvd , and started when the man reportedly walked away from his car after leaving it running in the middle of the road.

ASSAULT ON POLICE, 2024-10060137, 3500 block of 22nd Street S. At approximately 6:00 p.m. on October 6, police were dispatched to the report of a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect was driving erratically in the area and subsequently exited the vehicle and left it running in the roadway. A responding officer observed the suspect walking away from the vehicle and issued commands for him to stop. The suspect ignored the officer’s commands and continued walking away, during which he produced a lighter and lit it close to the officer’s face. With the assistance of an additional arriving officer, they attempted to take the suspect into custody. The suspect remained non-compliant, actively resisted arrest and grabbed the officers. A third officer arrived on scene and the suspect was taken into custody. During a search incident to arrest, suspected narcotics were recovered. As part of the investigation, the suspect was transported to an area hospital where he continued to be combative and attempted to bite an officer. [The suspect], 45, of Alexandria, VA was arrested and charged with Attempted Malicious Wounding of Law Enforcement, Assault on Police (x2), Obstruction of Justice, and Driving Under the Influence.
