DC police warn against wearing designer shoes, expensive items in public

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Police in D.C. issued a community warning, advising Washingtonians of the dangers of wearing designer goods while out and about in the District.

Officers say robberies and thefts of some expensive items, specifically designer sneakers, are on the rise and have targeted children and teenagers in several cases.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) called out a few designer brands in their warning, including Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Amiri and Lanvin, saying those brands are top targets for thieves.

“That’s a little scary, nobody wants to be told to leave stuff at home,” said Jackson Shyburgh.

“I think in certain areas, it’s probably wise not to walk around with designer,” said Donna Kissling, a long-time Washingtonian. “Sometimes I’ll walk in the street if I have to. I’m just very aware of my surroundings and I never wear headphones.”
