Maryland victim loses $400k in phishing scam; officials urge vigilance against fraud

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — A man was arrested after scamming a Rockville, Maryland, citizen out of $400,000 in a phishing scheme. Police are warning residents to stay alert for similar online scams.

The scam victim sent multiple checks to a Canadian business after the scammers created a convincing story to gain the victim’s trust, said the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (MCOCP).

Phishing is a scam where criminals pretend to be trustworthy in emails, texts or phone calls. The criminals’ goal is to trick people into sending money, sharing personal or financial information, MCOCP said…
