Sales tax holidays in Maryland and Virginia: See the dates and details

You can get a break from paying sales tax in Maryland and Virginia on many qualifying purchases, just in time for back-to-school shopping.

Virginia tax-free days in 2025

From Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 3, Virginia will give shoppers a break from paying sales tax on qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products.

That includes qualifying school supplies costing $20 or less per item and qualifying clothing and footwear costing $100 or less per item. See details on what qualifies online here.
