Alexandria has exceeded the 2030 regional goals for developing new affordable housing, and now the city is setting its sights on establishing a new benchmark for 2040.
On July 30 (Wednesday), the Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee will discuss housing affordability targets and other considerations going into the city’s Housing 2040 Master Plan. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
Once approved this December, the plan will act as a blueprint for the city on how to meet new affordable housing goals, as well as prioritize legislation and city investments.
The city received about 1,200 responses in a Housing 2040 survey conducted between November 2024 and January 2025. Top concerns among respondents included the cost of buying a home, rent prices, annual rent increases, and fear of displacement.
The city has been working for more than a decade to dig itself out of an affordable housing crisis. Alexandria lost 90% of its affordable housing stock between 2000 and 2017.
