DC councilmembers question Metro police use of force during alleged fare evasion arrest

WASHINGTON — A fare evasion arrest on the Metro has riled up some District leaders and community members after a video circulating online shows Metro Transit Police pinning a woman to the ground at the Navy Yard station.

Afeni — a D.C. activist with more than 60,000 followers on Instagram — was identified by Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White and the activist group Harriet’s Wildest Dreams as the woman in the video.

When asked about the activist’s arrest, MTP directed WUSA9 to a social media post describing an arrest of a 28-year-old Friday night. In addition to fare evasion, an MTP spokesperson noted that the person had been booked on resisting arrest and obstruction of justice charges…
