‘Free DC’: Hundreds on U Street protest federalization of District

A few hundred people from all four quadrants of Washington, D.C., plus Maryland and Virginia, gathered Thursday to protest the federal involvement in local matters.

“Free D.C.!” The crowd near U and 14th Streets NW chanted. One sign read, “Hands off D.C.!”

The image of a protester throwing a submarine sandwich was projected onto a building. The image became an unofficial symbol of D.C.’s resistance after a man was seen in a viral video throwing a sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent.

“It’s time for us to reintroduce ourselves to President Trump, to remind him that D.C. stands united, that D.C. is willing to fight. Fight for our humanity, recognizing that this fight is so much larger than D.C. because we’re not just holding the line for residents.
